As technology advances as a rapid rate, many companies are looking for employees trained to handle their growing technological needs.   Many businesses are now turning to engineering majors—trained to use mathematics and physical science to solve technological problems in a cost-effective way—to help meet the demands of a growing professional climate. Experts predict that the need for engineers will increase at a “faster-than-usual” rate through 2014, making it a great time to consider a college degree in engineering. Here are ten engineering jobs currently on the rise that are both challenging and financially rewarding!

  1. Agricultural engineers. Companies looking to incorporate green practices need experts in green technology to do so. Average yearly salary: $61,000-$75,000.
  2. Biomedical engineers. Health-related professions are constantly looking to develop new devices and procedures to help solve medical issues, and turn to biomedical engineers to help in that development. Average yearly salary: $62,000-$76,000.
  3. Chemical engineers. Chemical engineers aid not only in chemical manufacturing, but also in the production of energy, food, clothing and electronics. Average yearly salary: $61,000-$78,000.
  4. Civil engineers. Business look to civil engineers to help plan and oversee the development of roads, buildings, transportation systems and more. Average yearly salary: $52,000-$66,000.
  5. Electrical engineers. Electrical engineers help plan and manufacture electrical equipment, including navigation and transmission devices, lighting and wiring. Average yearly salary: $59,000-$74,000.
  6. Electronics engineers. Different from electrical engineers, electronics engineers deal less with power-generating and more with communications systems. Average yearly salary: $66,000-81,000.
  7. Environmental engineers. Engineers in the environmental sciences apply chemistry and biology to aid in pollution control, waste management, clean water and public health. Average yearly salary: $53,000-$66,000.
  8. Industrial engineers. Companies need industrial engineers to make the most of resources in the development of new products, including machines, materials, energy and even employees. Average yearly salary: $60,000-$76,000.
  9. Health and safety engineers. Health and safety engineers help companies keep work environments safe and injury-free. Average yearly salary: $56,000-$70,000.
  10. Mechanical engineers. These engineers often deal with heavy machinery and large equipment, including wind turbines, generators, engines and more. Average yearly salary: $58,000-$73,000.
