All the graded projects evolve from the first project, so I plan to change the names and see what happens on the next project. I recall from the Eng. Comp essays that you don't always get the same person grading your projects and I know that the one who graded this project was the same one who gave me my lowest essay grade, so she/he just happens to grade harder.

Heck, I could have mailed you my book and you would have had it by now!!!

I have to say with the exception of this semester, I generally have my shipments within 3-4 days of them being shipped. Luckily this semester there isn't an actual book just the study guides which I downloaded. I actually had to call them and ask for the tests to be unlocked because I was ready to take them. The study material was unlocked, not the exams.

Do you have Nutrition next????

How are you doing? I can certainly understand your disappointment regarding the name issue with your project. Have you considering discussing the issue with your instructor?

I have not really started my english class because I still have not received my books. I do have the PDF study guides but I need the book to read the required material. I am actually very annoyed at how long it takes to start a new semester.

Here is some information that I received from our Veterinary Technician Program Director, Dr. Margi:

There are two clinical practicums in the program, one after semester two and one just before graduation. Students will receive more detailed information prior to the start of the practicums.

Students must locate a suitable veterinary clinic/hospital and send back the required paperwork (provided IN the Practicum Packet you will receive) to Penn Foster for approval.

The practicums are designed to allow the program to document your performance of specific skills required by the AVMA. No prior work experience can be substituted for this.

The first practicum is focused on skills related to office procedures, radiology (film-based), and routine small animal procedures (i.e. injections). Many of the skills must be performed at a companion animal general practice. The second practicum covers the remainder of the skills and covers some large animals and small mammals as well. Required Skills can be found on the AVMA website, please review this site for additional information.

The practicum site must meet specific criteria for equipment and staffing. A detailed booklet is provided to you when you are near the end of semesters 2 and 4 that contains all this information. A minimum of 225 hours of clinical experience is required for each practicum. You are required to complete the minimum hours in approximately 12 weeks. A maximum of five months is allowed for completion of the practicum. No potential practicum site can be pre-approved.

You can also view our Veterinary Technician forum (http://community.pennfoster.edu/forums1/f/106.aspx) and ask your fellow students for feedback on the program and perhaps they can give you some insight as to what Veterinary Clinics/Hospitals they used for their practicums. Best of luck to you!

Good Morning Lisa!

How do you like the English Comp class??? This Bus & Tech Writing class is time consuming!! I'm a little disappointed because I only got an 89 on my first graded project and most of the comments were about the names I chose - go figure!! The comment was "use appropriate names" - I used names of friends and family - really not fair. My cousin's name is Stormie Lynn Nites, so I used Stormie Nites and my godchild's name is Summer Rose Pate, so I used Summer Rose, apparently they are not appropriate names!

Medical coders are employed by hospitals, clinics, elder care facilities, and related work environments that require the maintence of accurate medical data. Some employers require that you are certified by the American Academy of Professional Coders.

Students are eligible, after passing this program and achieving 2 years' experience in the field, to sit for the certification exam offered by the American Academy of Professional Coders.

Hey Maeghen, Spanish come with CD's and they also send you flashcards. Yes spanish does have 12 exams. I'm only on the 4th exam, and it is getting super hard, so if you don't have any self-discipline i would not reccommend taking this class.

We were looking over the school store and was wondering if there is any additional apperal that will be added that says Penn Foster High School.. He really liked the White T-Shirt that was a contest Logo Winner but it said Penn Foster College. Will there be any with the High School Logo on them soon? Augusto, i would not get a direct response in regards to this type of question. This is something the Executives would have to decide on along with Education. Partnership with any other college or university would be a huge decision that would take quite some time to see come to fruition. Penn Foster is currently focused on developing programs for the National Labor College.

As far as being admitted to the College of your choice, no high school can guarantee that. All colleges and universities have varied requirements for acceptance which may depend on tuition costs, your program of interest, the number of students they may accept, quotas, your GPA, your S.A.T. scores, your extra curricular activities, internships, employment, and entrance exams. Lisa, There is no "list" of students in particular programs. To find others in your program use the search bar. Simply type in the name of your program of study, click SHOW ALL and then use the ADVANCED SEARCH OPTIONS to choose PEOPLE from the drop down menu. This will display all users who have indicated in their profile that they are in that particular program of study. I was hoping to get through the High School program and then hopefully go to a regular college, but with all the things I read and heard, I think I want to find a regular school. I am a emergency medical services administrator who is about to retire and is looking to jewelry design and repair as a vocation for me in my retirement. I graduated from college (undergraduate and graduate) with degrees in Geology. After teaching geology for several years, i became a paramedic and then started teaching emergency medical technology. I was reintroduced to my love of minerals (gems) several years ago by my wife when she bought me several carats of unknown gemstones. Thus I started my Gemology studies, then I decided I needed to do something with thge gemstones that I hgad and started in wire wrapping and silver smithing. I also started being a lapidary and bought a flat lap for cutting gems. I love this genre and desire to expand my knowledge and abiliities. woooops, i turned off my router connection and hopefully am now back online.

We are somewhat similar, i am about to retyire and have gotten into jewelry making and lapidary and gemology. Hello, Sorry I have not been on much. I was also trying to start some on line discussion.

I am almost finished with my course, 2 lessons and 2 projects to go. I am hoping to start a second career as a bench jeweler. I am at retirement age almost, so when I grow up I want to be a jeweler:-) I know I will need more classes to pass a bench jewlers test, but I have learned a lot during this course. If I cannot get a position, I will probably make my own jewelry and go the craft fair route. From what I have learned I feel pretty confident I can offer repair, and other things most crafters can't.

I notice you use the tag gemlover. I fell for the jewelry business last September. I was on vacation with my wife and we decided to check a gem mine in Hiddenite, NC. What a blast. I found a bunch of gemstones, had some set as jewelry. Well that got me started in Rock Hounding. So I bought a tumbler and started tumbling agates. Then I wanted to do something with the agates, so I started learning wire wrapping. Then I wanted to do metal smithing, so here I am.

Well I hope to continue in the jewelry business, I know I have just scratched the surface.

Truthfully, nobody owes anybody anything. No one is ***entitled*** to anything they didn’t create, finance, and work hard to maintain. The nature of employment is that an individual provides their time and skills to achieve a goal of an employer in return for a sum of money and maybe benefits. With the exception of legally protected groups and status, the employer has the right to require a certain dress code and the right to create the culture they believe will help them achieve the firm’s goals. Public relations are a MAJOR part of a firm’s success. I’ve worked in the public sector (county government in an urban area) and I’ve worked in the private sector (I.T. firms in the suburbs). I can personally attest to people being denied promotions, ignored in meetings, side-eyed by customers/clients, and even laughed at if their image/carriage wasn’t together. I remember going to a lab for blood work. There was a young man who was phlebotomist there. He was dressed like a hip-hop/rapper thug. I was pregnant. I took one look at him and said heck- to –the- naw. I demanded a nurse or I was out of there. If this man wasn’t mature enough to dress appropriately for a job why would I trust his ability to do his job well? This is an internal issue as much as it is an external issue.

(This discussion is not anyway related to racial issues in the work place. Even though it is also a law to not be judged by the color of your skin when it comes to the work place, it is just irrelevant to this discussion because you do not choose to be a certain skin color.)

I’m an ethnically self-respecting and historically literate African American woman. I half to disagree the race is irrelevant to this discussion. I do understand the desire to avoid controversial subjects that can invoke hatred and dehumanization.

But I’d thought I share this with you: African American women for decades have been going through what you are going through. The majority of us have jet black, thick, and kinky hair. This is referred to as natural hair. The majority use hair straigthners, weaves, or wigs. Many women of color who wear their hair naturally, have braids, or are even bald have been discriminated against because the employer saw it as an image/carriage issue in addition to being uncomfortable. The majority of us a) sucked it up and kept on moving by perming/weaves/wigs/short cuts b) went to the public sector or c) started our own business.

In the end YOU know who YOU are. No one can take away your dignity unless you give it to them. When it comes to survival: you do what half to do not necessarily what you want to do.

If I could have chosen more than one option in this poll I would have chose both more degrees in science and mathematics. I’d settle for a 1 year certificate program. We are now living in the digital area. The majority of today’s jobs require science, math, and analytical skills.

1 year certificate in biomedical sciences

1 year certificate in bio chemistry sciences

1 year certificate in bio technology

If the vet tech where I go had a funky hair color it would not bother me at all. If they had a funky do I might stare little at first but it would not stop me from going back. So what would you say if they told you they want to hire you but you have to lose the hair color and piercings while on the job? Would you turn them down or accept?

I remember seeing somewhere in these forums (though I can't find it now) that the first lesson shipment for the A.S. in PC Maintenance Tech didn't come in the mail, it was just the PDF files available in the My Courses section of the Student Homepage. Just wondering if anyone can tell me whether I should worry about calling student services to tell them I didn't get the shipment on Monday, or not. Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I use eCampus daily, and love it. I did take some time for me to feel my way around, and I made a couple of minor mistakes. I still cannot fiqure out how to see a list of current students in my program; however, I made several connections with others in diffrent programs. I like how eCampus is open to all HS, CS, & College students instead of being seperated.

First off I want to congratulate everyone on here for taking that step to better themselves for their family! That seems to be the goal of all on this post and it really tugs at the heart strings! I can relate being in two programs myself, Web Page Design and Small Business Management, with a 7 month old. (Finishing up the web design and just starting the small business…) It does take some tricky time management but just think of how good it will feel with that diploma in your hand. (And what a sense of accomplishment!) At first it may seem like a daunting task but if you just keep at it you will eventually finish. Even if you get close to your expiration date the school will work with you and you can get an extension. So keep on studying and you will meet your goals!!! :0)

Nope I'm not a religious person but I did just look it up and it seems to me that basically they're people who believe the bible is the word of god and it's their job to dedicate their life to god by carrying out his will, the reason this has a special name over others is because the belief is they accurately weeded out what the "facts" are in the bible and it’s not based on human speculations that's why they have to be the ones to teach it the “right” way or guide it in what they believe to be the most accurate direction, so it required a special name to stand out. This is just what I put together from a quick search, I’m not really sure though.

That is great news!!! What about a partnership with Excelsior College? they have a policy where they recognize credits from DETC degree granting institutions that have their coursework approved by ACE and treat them the same way as they treat credits from Regionally Accredited institutions.

Not many DETC degree granting institutions have ACE approved coursework, Penn Foster is one of those very few schools. Excelsior college policy was established because of Penn Foster students and their transcript evaluators are very familiar with PF coursework, they have a partnership program for 2 year colleges and that would make transfer easier and cheaper for Penn Foster students.

What about the new classes? Like English Composition II, Advance Composition (in general the classes that were added for the Bachelors degrees) .Are you going to have them approved too?

There are also new associate degrees that include new classes that have not been approved. As I stated on my first post it a VERY BIG strenght having coursework approved to allow students maximum credit transferability and I think Penn Foster has not been promoting it well enough. That could potentially bring a lot more students to PF and will also produce happier graduates for the school.

Why dont you start a poll to have an idea of how many of the students would like to get their bachelors degree?

Thanks for starting the E-campus and giving students a voice, we have been silent for a long time not because we didnt want to talk but because there was no channel for us to expose our ideas, concerns and suggestions.

I just finished my resume, but still have to find childcare for my son so I haven't really applied for any jobs yet. You just need to fill out the IAAP membership form and send it back. You don't have to pay anything. They'll let you know that you are a member through your email. I took about a month for me, after the time I sent the forms.

Your right. My goal is to go to grad school eventually, I want the school I'm applying for to see what my overall GPA was. Even though, I was reading forums and people actually went to grad school from TESC and they claim they didn't have a letter grade or gpa from previous institutions. I didn't know how that work? Maybe they got a high score on the GRE. Anyways , im off to work, I messaged you my msn .

One important thing: You also need to send your PF transcript to Excelsior so you can receive a grade. Tesc is out of the picture and is much more expensive than Excelsior plus who is going to take you seriously with a degree with no GPA?

You know what, that is a WELL post! I was actually taking HOURS of research last night to see which one of the big "3", Charter Oak State College, Excelsior or TESC will actually put a letter grade on their transcripts from Penn Foster after a ACE transcript. From my understanding is...TESC will only put a pass/fail and..only put grades you receive from their school and their own GPA. So I guess TESC is out the picture. But now since you told me Excelsior put's grades from PF on their transcripts, I might pursue Excelsior after Penn Foster!!

And your right, I think they should renew ACE, it gives PF so much more opportunity. Penn Foster is better than the other NA schools because of ACE. The transfer opportunities are tremendous. I was just thinking of Bellevue University as well!

Another question is? For the student's in the program now, if they drop ACE by next year, does that mean all my credits wouldn't be ACE reviewed? I chose PF over other NA colleges only because they we're ACE reviewed .

Penn Foster has been great for me. Having most of the coursework ACE approved has made transferability of credits to regionally accredited colleges very easy and fast. In particular with Excelsior College that will recognize all the credit that is ACE approved and assign it a letter grade (in other schools ACE credit transfer as only as Pass/Fail).

Now, as a student pursuing an associates degree I am very worried. ACE credit recommendations are only valid for 3 years and the last review of Penn Foster coursework by ACE was in 2007, which means that by the end of 2010 the recommendations won't be valid anymore and colleges won't take them.

I have not heard from Penn Foster about the ACE review. Is Penn Foster going to renew ACE recommendations for their coursework? are they planning to drop ACE recommendations? I would like to know how is that going to be handled because it is crucial for my future. I hope you renew it and I think it would also be a great thing if you signed an articulation agreement with Excelsior college that is already taking the vast majority of Penn Foster's coursework, that would make even easier for Penn Foster College students to get their Bachelors degree from Excelsior.

Please dont give up ACE credit recommendations! dont make that mistake!. I think you should promote them and use them as a good base to sign articulation agreements with 4 year institutions, like the one with Mountain State. ACE gives you power, not only to the school but to the student body and unfortunately you have not talked much about credit recommendations so most students don't know what they are for and that can make a big difference in the life of many students like me, that want a better tomorrow for our families.

Please let us know how are you going to proceed regarding ACE credit recommendations and we hope the answer is positive. Thank you very much!

Thank you admin! I e-mailed the school again to follow up on the status of adjusting my grade. You are right. Every college and university student I have talked to has encountered exam errors along the way. As long as it gets corrected it is a learning experience for both the school and the student.

I usually read also Monday thru Friday. And I am in Psychology also. I Read like 15 pages in the morning before my kids get up for school, then work all day, I do a small amount of reading during my lunch hour,

and finish the night with around 20 more pages after my kids go to sleep. I have a hard time reading when there is alot of noise going on. And Psychology has alot of stuff to learn. My weekends are my time off so I usually do not do any school work either. Its my break time.

We are making changes to electronic and printed content every day – far more often than traditional publishers that create textbooks used on every college campus.

Evelyn, No we do not have currently offer any bachelor degrees in education. I believe at minimum you'll need to complete a four-year bachelor's degree program to teach. And all states require public school teachers to become licensed before beginning their teaching career.

Evelyn, You would have to contact your instructor about this. I do believe if there is an error in an exam and you bring it to the attention of your instructor they will credit your for it. Now, if you failed your exam and had to re-take it you may not be able to get credit but you will have to discuss this with your instructor.

I am still waiting to hear back from the school. I am pretty sure that the corrected question they sent me still had errors in it. I replied to the instructors e-mail Monday and got confirmation that they got it. Maybe it's a rather complicated process. I'll give them until Monday and I am writing or calling again. I would really like my grade adjusted. I SHOULD NOT HAVE TO PAY FOR THE SCHOOL'S ERRORS!

I plan to Monday thru Friday. I do a lesson or rather an assignment a day. I try to leave weekends open either as reward for completing my goals or for grace if I need to catch up. The fundamentals of early childhood education course was like average 30 pages a day. That was hard at first but when I saw that Psychology was average of 40-50 pages I decided to divide it up into 10 pages at a time or with Psych. they already have it divided nicely into modules. I read through a module, refer to the study guide and answer the questions I can and then take a short break. It takes longer to get through but my attention span has done better that way. I work part time 3 afternoons a week to so I have mornings. But, being in my first trimester of pregnancy school has taken a hit as I am soooo tired most of the time and when I feel good there are things I would do rather than school. :)

Okay. Cool. I am planning on paying up front next semester as well and might just do that. I haven't had to wait for my shipments though. It usually takes 2-3 days from when they send it (even though they tell you to give them 10) I really need to pace myself next semester and having all my books would help. I want to finish it before I have my baby in April. :)

Hi,

I read a post earlier by someone that said there are sometimes errors on the exams results. I found this to be the case too. The word country man was listed in the multiple answers as county man. And yet county man was a type-o that was graded as the correct answer. Needless to say I became very discouraged.

I'm looking for anyone that is taking this course as well so that I can brainstorm with that individual. There is a research paper that will be due soon. So if someone is interested please let me know.

I don't think I'd really like the idea of test-taking 'on the go.' I imagine that taking your tests while you're out and about, you'd be distracted and scores would probably be lower. But I'm all for being able to DL study guides, supplements, etc., to read while on the bus, waiting for service at a restaurant, etc. Also, being able to pay tuition (because I always seem to remember such things when I'm nowhere near a computer) would be nice, and being able to review your grades.

The 2nd project in Semester one Health, Safety & Nutrition is research. It's actually easier than the first project of visiting and assessing a center. I'm in the music portion of semester one and it is really boring. I'm having trouble staying focused with it but I'll manage.

You can request that they send you all of the books and materials in the semester you paid in full. It saves time because it takes about 2-3 weeks before getting the next book once you pass a test.

I love the idea. I've already loaded my study guides (pdf) onto my Kindle. It would be great to see the textbooks in e-reader style, as well. If it's just about the books, then an iPad might be overkill - unless PF is thinking about test- or learning-module apps.

From a cost perspective, a Kindle or Nook is far cheaper and handles books and Adobe documents very well. (On the new Kindles, you can also add highlights and annotations to text, which would be a must for many of us who like to make notes in our textbook margins.)

Whatever the format, if PF decides to move forward on the e-reader/tablet platform, it would be very nice to carry one small mobile device instead of textbooks and a stack of study guides. One would think that the eliminated cost of textbook printing and textbook delivery would also help offset some of the upfront cost of the mobile device.

As far as being admitted to the College of your choice, no high school can guarantee that. Jjustin, I couldn't find complete information for any of mine either. I just tried to list as many of the details that they had listed in the study guide. I just kept Googling EMRs until I found some companies that actually had pdf's to download regarding their features and components.

Hi I am 24, i have a 2 year old son and i also work full time as a nurse aide, i work about 45 to 50 hours a week! It is very hard and i work 2cnd shift, but it can be done. I get up with my son in the morning and we spend that time together till i go to work at 2, i get home at 11pm and spend more time with him then he goes to bed, the only time for school is late at night, then i get about 4 to 5 hours of sleep and do it all over again! It is very challenging but it can be done! Best of luck to you!

I agree with everybody. You can't be embarrassed to be here! You're getting an education!! That's the most important part. Not everyone get's an education these days. Some people just don't have the money to go to college, and some who just don't care to go to college! I'm In the Criminal Justice Associates degree program. After I finish, I'm planning to transfer to a RA school that is under "transfer" on Penn Foster's schools that accepted them. I understand not all RA schools will accept my credits, but knowing Penn Foster is part of ACE it's a big plus for me! I plan on getting my bachelor's, and than my masters. Once I'm done, I'm going to RE-ENROLL in the business associates program and then continue. I have big goals. I'm only 19. I could of gone to a state university or local community college like all my friends did, but I loved the self paced format. Also, I will know I won't graduate in debt like all my other friends! Trust me, you did a excellent choice and you should not be embarrassed being part of Penn Foster. Trust me!! =]

If you are embarrassed to be here, then why are you? I'm going through the Paralegal program (associate's degree) and it's accredited with the N.A.L.A and the N.F.P.A. That means it has all the information provided to be a fully certified paralegal. If your program meets all the requirements by whatever association or organization sets the standards for it, why would you be embarrassed by it?

Don't be a bottom feeder who just rides on the name of the school your parents paid for. Learn your stuff and actually be good at what you do.

Transfer from Certificate Program

The website says your GD certificate classes transfer to the AS program, so I called to find out how many more classes I'd need to take and how much more I'd need to pay to upgrade to the AS. The person I spoke with couldn't tell me anything except to send in $30 for an evaluation, so I hope by posting here I can find out what I need to know before I finish my last two classes.

I'd also like to know if I can transfer any of my general (English/Math, etc) classes from a previous degree to the GD AS, or if the the certificate classes make up the 50% transfer limit. Thanks!

My first psychology exam. I used the test out of my study guide which the instructor says is not correct. It was just one question- the only one I got wrong! I know you recently took that exam as well. If you have any concerns about it please contact the school. I don't want to get into too many details as I know they have strict rules about discussing exams on forums. It might have just been my materials that were flawed as the instructor said they had up-dated correct ones. Still frustrated. I am working my butt off for high grades and I will be upset if they get cut because of the school's errors!

That totally just happened to me. The question in my exam was worded wrong. I answered it the best I could based on the options. The question was worded in such a way that the right answer was wrong. I asked for my grade to be adjusted and am waiting to hear back. I will scrutinize my exams more in the future and anything that I can't clearly find an answer to I will call the instructor first. I realize that mistakes happen and my understanding is that they are working to correct them. It's just frustrating that I can't trust my own college for accurate test questions.

You should have assignments as well as exams in every program of study. Your materials are shipped to you but depending on your course of study you should be able to access your assignments immediately via the student message center. Login to your student message center at http://www.pennfoster.edu to see your course information or contact your instructor if you need additional information.

I am not aware of any new bachelor degree programs available in the near future. As far as a recommendation for another school I am really not able to do so. I am not an academic advisor but I suggest you research fully any schools you wish to attend. Contact their admission departments to have your transcripts reviewed and from their you can make an informed decision. And remember you can always seek advice from your fellow students in the forums.

Lisa, We had planned on having masters degree programs through our Daggett Graduate School.

Unfortunately, The Daggett Graduate School has been postponed indefinitely. This was due to accreditation and recognition issues across various states. Penn Foster wants to offer the highest quality education products to our students and we hope to relaunch these degrees sometime in the future, perhaps with our National Labor College.

Hi Everyone! I just finished my fundamentals course but haven't started on the project yet. I work at a Head Start, so I am just waiting until the second week of school to do my project there. I am only a center assistant, and they don't require me to have any degree (just a couple ece classes) but I would like to be able to move up eventually, so here I am. I love this because you work at your own pace. I was worried if I would be able to do this with a job, 4 kids, and being out of highschool for awhile (15 yrs - ouch, I am getting old! lol) But its been fun.

Some of it is the benefits you get from becoming a member but I was more interested in the externships. I didn't look far into it so forgive me for my ignorence, but how would you go about getting an externship through them? Would it be like turning in an essay?

I know that it isn't a bad idea it would be great experience and a great way to get noticed if any of the Vet Tech students decided to further thier education as a Veterinary.

I needed a break, so I am taking August off. I will dive into semester 7 during labor day weekend. I will probably leave all of the projects and papers for the end of the semester, like I usually do. I am also taking the Certified Personal Trainer course, so I have been working on that instead. I wish I had just ordered the self study kit instead of signing up for the course though. There isn't much to it, and I could have saved $400.

We didn't do anything this summer, but we have a trip coming up next month to the Wizarding World of Harry Potter in Orlando. Then in December we are taking a cruise.

It's nice to be able to take vacation whenever I want to. I was in an local college for a while, and I couldn't miss any classes without lowering my grade, so we could only take vacation when the school did. Those are usually peak travel times. I finally had to drop out of that program when I needed 8 weeks off to have surgery.

I am on hoping to take my first psychology exam today as well as call another day care about my semester project. As I expected those directors are hard to get a hold of. Hi! I earned my diploma June 29th. So far, no luck landing an interview (but I am only trying for a Hotel entry level job/not really interested in Restaurants). I will keep trying; I live in Florida and know the tourism industry is picking up so remain hopeful. I really enjoyed the course, very general and easy to grasp. The tuition was affordable, so glad I went through with it :) Good luck!

I bet they have it! If I recall correctly it took my instructor for the math almost a week to grade my exam and post the score. I truly understand your frustration, but not much you can do about it. Its amazing how much one forgets about verbs, nouns, pronouns, ect. and their functions!!! I'm not looking forward to all the writing, but, I shall survive!!! Thanks for checking on me!! Yes, the availability of electives changes from year to year. If it is not listed as an option you can pick from, then more than likely it is because that subject is no longer available in our high school program. To verify for sure, you may want to contact the high school department.

I am getting ready for my 2 classes in semester 2, English Comp and Nutrition. But, I have to patiently wait for my mailed proctor exam is received and graded. I hate the waiting part. Yes, that' true. So far all of my proctored exams have been open book and you can use your notes, no computers though. Calculators are allowed, but its been my experience that you must show all of your work.

I"m 16, I'm gonna start college in the Spring (I'll be 17 by then).

You really shouldn't worry about going to school at 17, alot of people are graduating early these days, I'm sure you won't be the only one who is 17 ;].

Yeah I didn't really see my friends in classes either I usually saw them in lunch or in the hallways. But I live in the country so most of my friends are really far away and it's usually hard to make time to see them.

I stopped going for exactly the same reasons (even the allergies part, although I was aware of mine, it's just hard for me to avoid them sometimes and I recently found out have asthmatic bronchitis, which is just wonderful). I was out of school so much that I was behind on school work and 90% of the time I didn't even know what we were doing. And I hated the fact that I couldn't just do the work as fast as I wanted to when I figured out how to do it, I was constantly getting scolded by teachers for starting my work before they were done rambling about it.

oh, it's not really that hard. I mean, 750 words isn't that bad. I thought I was doing an awful job at it but, I ended up getting a B. Most of the mistakes were using '&' instead of spelling it out.

Well I enrolled 9/16/2009 and the first semester I blew through in about 4 months ... the 2nd semester I had a lot going on and had surgery during that time also so it ended up taking me about 6 months BUT b.c of the things I had going on I went several weeks sometimes without touching anything so I could've gotten through it quicker if things hadn't gotten in my way.

I am in the BS Criminal Justice program but I had a paralegal course in my current 3rd semester. It was Legal Research & Writing. I have done mostly everything except the 2nd project and the CALR project. Has anybody done these and found them difficult? The rest of the course work lesson exams was fairly easy but the projects kind of baffled me for some reason and I am a very advanced computer person and researcher but my first project I made in the 70's on it lol so it didn't work out too good... Just wondered if I am the only one that found it difficult!

The proctored exams are really not bad at all... The time is about 1 hour per test. You gotta move fairly quickly but it's open book so that makes it really helpful! The first one feels like it starts forever and it's intimidating but the 2nd time you do proctors it feels much easier and smooth flowing... I just started my 3rd semester, and my last proctored exams I didn't feel stressed at all but the first semester I was terrified ...... You'll do great once you get the hang of how it goes, but it's not bad at all!!!

oh jeez so many reasons I might not be able to remember em all. well first off I got put in classes with all the stoners and weirdos, second my parents didn't want me to be around the type of kids that were in that school, third I'm kinda nocturnal; I can never sleep at night but sleep fine during the day, it's weird, fourth I wanted more time sing and play guitar, and do the things I like to do.. I didn't have any time with school in the way, fifth I was sick all the time and always in the clinic, which turns out I have more food allergies than I thought and now I'm feeling a lot better.. I might of missed some reasons lol but theres a few. haha

Hi everyone i've been checking the boards looking for other students that are in the same program im in or just to make some friends with new students like myself and this board is quiet and boring. am i sending my posts to the wrong boards? I'm in the human resources management associate degree program and i know im not the only one in the program AM I lol. Ive previewed other online schools forums before and there is always talking and sharing going on with them just wondering why there arent more students on here chatting and responding to each other. Yeah a good amount of them. The school i went to though was a pretty small one there was only 150 kids in my grade so i saw my friends a alot,but like you said its not like i wont see them any more we will still hang out.

busek0329, no because mine didn't even see me at school. we'd all hang out on weekends and at partys so it was okay. but I remember when I found out it was my last day there I told one of my friends in the hallways and it wasint even a big deal to her since we nvr saw eachothr. are your friends mad at you for switching?

Today has not been my day.. So today I log on to retake a Examination and then take on my last two test, which I already studied for.. come to find out

when I go to take my retake I got a message saying.. *Student Study Time has Expired. I have 2 to take and 1 to make up?? After I'm done I moved on to sems 2

I see my Enrollment Date was 8/24/2009 but It took me a year due to the Navy and moving overseas.. now I am guessing I'm out of luck?? what is going on??

This just sucks.. My account is paid in full I just want to move on to sems #2 :(

I'm in my 50's and obtaining this degree is just a personal goal. I have a GREAT well-paying job, hopefully once I have the degree I also get a promotion!

I am glad we have the option of uploading our writing assignments. I kind of figured there were no lectures; it would be a nice optional feature.

I always thought I was a patient person, but waiting on my proctor exam grade proves me wrong. I really want to get started on my next class.

Once I complete my BSBM, I was thinking of working on the HR certificate. When I get to that point, I will call student services.

So, what do you want to be when you grow up? I would love to own a small senior assisted living home with 5-8 residents. Financially, it will probably never happen.

The ages of my kiddos are 18 (step-son), 13 x2 (daughter and step-daughter), 11, 10, 5 (Special Needs), 18mo.

Hi Kristian, my name is Lisa, I just enrolled in July and I find the course to be great fun. It is challenging enough to stimulate my mind yet it is all set up in a way that is clear and simple to understand. I have already completed 7 exams, my lowest grade was 85 and my overall average grade is currently 91 but I will bring that up with my next exam. I've learned that the trick to knowing the material is to read all the material twice and to make flash cards. If I had somebody to study with we could quiz each other and make up puzzles and such.

Any way, it is a great course, fun, challenging, stimulating, and exciting. If I were you I would go for it with gusto.

Hi Erin, my name is Lisa Jean, there is nothing for you to be nervous about. As long as you read your books and all the supplements, watch the videos, and use flash cards you will do great. I read all of the material twice. The online participation was a little tricky for me at first but a simple call to an instructor cleared that up for me. I have not taken a proctored exam yet but I am confident that I will do great because I know the material.

I also am a writer, I am taking the Breaking into Print course offered by Longridge Writers Group to help enhance my skills and to learn a little more about submitting articles that will be accepted and published in magazines.

I am also going to enroll in the Dog Obedience Training certificate program here at Penn Foster. I just have to get my third payment in first.

I am not currently working anywhere, I am just doing odd jobs here and there. Jobs like repairing household appliances or lawn mowers and such. I have a couple of people that I pay bills for and balance their checkbooks and file their taxes, and I sell puppies occasionally, and I own an apartment building that brings in some monthly income, but I am currently on disability and am taking advantage of this time to learn as much as I can so that when I do go back to work it will be in a field that I love.

I would be more than happy to study with you and be a shoulder for you to cry on, I could use a study buddy and I am in desperate need of a shoulder myself.

I am a 41year old divorced mother of three children, they're grown now but I can't tell it. One daughter Renee is 24, my son Scott is 21, and my youngest daughter Joanne is 20.

I have never worked in a veterinary clinic at all but I have worked in a few pet stores. I do give all my pets their vaccines and I had to nurse a female dog I had back to health. She got mastitis after delivering a litter of 13 large puppies. Her entire abdominal area actually burst open and none of the clinics in town would treat her because I didn't have enough money, and they said that she would probably die anyway. So I went to our local farm and garden store, Tractor Supply, and purchased a broad spectrum antibiotic used for cattle when they get mastitis and weighed out the dosage for an 85 pound animal and gave it to her along with a human multi vitamin every day. I used Mupricin ointment on the wound and gave her aspirin for her fevers and pain. She healed fully but it took about 12 weeks. I debreed the wound twice a day to minimize scar tissue. I don't know if a veterinarian would have done it differently or not but she lived a long happy, healthy life of 16 years after that. So I do have some experience, just not the kind I would get if I worked in a clinic.

I am so excited about these courses, and I am doing well so far. I am on my second shipment and all I have left to do before I get my third shipment is complete the online classroom requirements and attend two webinars. I truly enjoy the work and the exams, I am a little nervous about the proctored exam only because I have to find a veterinarian to be my proctor. I am also nervous about having to find a clinic to work in because I am in Kalamazoo, Michigan and the economy is so bad that our area McDonalds has laid off workers. But being that I will be working unpaid gives me some hope.

I know I talked alot, I just don't have many people to talk to about my schooling and my animals.

Hi Lori! Nice to meet you too! Thank you also for your service to our country! I just started my Psychology class this week. I like it but it's a little overwhelming at times.

Terri, were you able to finish your semester project? I have just started calling day cares. I am a little nervous about it but I know that once I get the ball rolling it will be fine. I keep telling myself I have plenty of time. But, I need to be vigilant so my proctored exams are not waiting on it.

A little secret (as secret as a forum can be) I just found out that I am pregnant last week. I am in denial and going to the DR. to confirm it tomorrow. If I am not pregnant than something strange is wrong with me and making my HPT's positive and me feel awful :) My husband and I are super excited but this was not a planned pregnancy. I had hoped to finish school first. My plan is to get as much done as I can beforehand (hopefully two semesters), take a break and then slow down and work as I can. I am glad to have other classmates who are moms with many children doing this. If you can do this with with 4+ children I can surely do it with one. We can encourage each other and hold each other accountable. Best of luck to both of you!

writing assignments can be uploaded or mailed, much easier to upload.

I have economics this semester and it is not a recorded lecture, it is like all the other classes so far, book and study guides.

I started my 3rd semester yesterday. Bus. & Tech. Writing has 5 exams and a graded project, but only 2 exams are multiple choice. Managerial accounting has 4 exams, but lots of work prior to the exams.

Since you only have 2-3 classes per semester you should be whizzing by me real soon.

Are writing assignments mailed to the school like proctor exams, or are they uploaded or emailed?

I already had my AABA, so that is why I have several transferred credits. Most of my semesters are 2-3 classes until I hit semester 8, which I will have 5 classes to take.

Do you know if any of our classes will have an online recorded lecture? I am certainly into the distant learning concept, but I would benefit from a lecture on classes like Economics and Business Statics.

you must have a lot of transfer credits???? Seems you only have 2 classes per semester and I have at least 4 sometimes more. You can only do 1 class at a time in the order provided, but I've found that once your half-way they will send the next course material. I hated English Comp so once I finished the 2 exams and they send my other course mat'ls I moved on to the next class. Writing assignments get the best of me!!!!

Yes, they will post a message in your message center. How many exams did you have to take??? You are about to learn a lesson in patience! For my last exams, 2 of my grades posted within 2 days of the exams being rec'd, the other, took a week longer than the first 2. The waiting is the hardest part! BTW, its been my experience that most proctored exams are not multiple choice.

Since Penn Foster allows students to do a monthly payment plan, there may be financial terms that have to be met before a student can transfer majors. Depending on the program you wish to change to and the program you are currently taking some courses that you may have already paid for will not transfer over to your new program. For example if you were taking Motorcycle repair and you wanted to switch to medical transcription there may not be any courses you could transfer. Please contact student services at 1.800.427.1000 if you have specific transfer questions and also refer to your student handbook.

Students can change majors but it is reviewed on a case by case basis as there are requirements that have to be met, especially with the degree programs.
There is a $50 transfer fee, but students must also cover the tuition on the current program so Penn Foster is paid in full for what you have completed already…and there may be other fees depending on what you have completed / no completed in your program.
Credits transfer only if the same course is on the new program and you have to proctor out on those courses before we can transfer it over…which involves speaking with our college group.
If it is non-college then any applicable exam grades are moved over.

Shipment time frames vary depending on the course you are in and your geographic location. In general, from the time a shipment is ordered until it leaves our warehouse is usually a 48 hour process. Within the United States, we allow 7 to 10 business days for a shipment to be received by a student when it is sent out through regular mail. Our regular mail is sent by United States Postal Service (USPS) 4th class mail.

There are about eight programs that do not receive their first shipment in their course mailed to them. For these programs the exams and study guides are available online. Here is a list of the effected programs

Hi all, I enrolled on July 18, 2010. I am doing medical coding and billing and have done 5 exams, and i am averaging a B so I am doing pretty good for now however I am on the essay part and I have never written but one essay so I am stuck because I do not know how to........:(

PENN FOSTER COLLEGE - Changing major

I have been reading around on here and have read that people have changed their course/major. I contacted the school and asked how I would go about doing that.

They replied saying its impossible to do so, and if I wanted to change I would have to cancel from my current course, pay the "liability" on my account ($600) and RE-enroll.

Can anyone explain the process they went through and how I can do so, or is this my only option.

question regarding college acceptance

Hi, I'm relatively new to Penn Foster High School. One of my main concerns about being enrolled in the school is whether or not I'll be admitted to the colleges of my choice. I know you need more than just a transcript to get into college. I'm planning to retake my SATs at my old public high school in October, I'm contacting several of my old teachers for reccomendation letters, I've had jobs and extracarriculars, and so far I've got an average of 90. I've also heard that a lot of the time where you live can be a factor in acceptance (I live in New York City). Has anybody who graduated from this program tell me if they got into decent colleges? Thanks for your time, I really appreciate it. =)

Hey Angel, I signed up last week. And once they gave me my student number, I took the math and reading assessment. They don't go on your GPA, Penn Foster just wants to know your level of reading and math no biggie. I did the orientation class after that as well, and now i'm just waiting for my transcripts from my community college to get to Penn Foster to see what classes I don't need to take. So i'm in the waiting game as well, also waiting for my books I haven't got them yet either. But you can still review the PDF files and take the exams in the mean time. Well thats all the help I can give you since im also new! Haha, good luck angel. And if you ever need help, Student services or the Administrator will be glad to help you with no problem in the future. Good luck !! :)

Hello everyone im new to the school and just wanted to say hello. I've been reading over the websites and finding my way around on here lol. I'm in the human resources management degree program and would love to meet up with other people who are just starting out with semester 1 or those that are ahead of me that can lend me some advice and pointers on what to expect. I'm waiting on my 1st set of books to arrive so i'm basically just reviewing stuff.

I did have a question though did you all wait until you go your books before doing the assignments for the math and reading assesment classes? I didnt know i would have to take these classes so i was surprised to see them in my class list lol. Anyway just wanted to say hello and look forward to meeting and maybe studying with some human resource management students.

Cost is key. Price/cost played a major role in why I chose PF in the first place. If offering a mobile device is used as a means to significantly increase the tuition costs then I'm against it. It should be an option for those that want to pay extra for it.

Whatever you develop for mobile devices I'd hope that it's platform agnostic. I see a lot of apps for the iPhone and Android OS that I would like to use but I just can't run on my BlackBerry.

I would really like to be able to download podcasts of some of my materials so I can listen to it on the go. I can't imagine trying to read long passages of text on the small screens of mobile devices.

Thank you, I'll keep you in mind. The only part about this course is that it could use more lab hours. I talked to an instructor about the lab training and he said theres gonna be two weeks of lab from 8 to 5 pm at the Penn State University campus in Harrisburg, PA. I also asked about the proctor exams for the semesters, he said we choose who administers the exams meaning we choose our proctor. I guess we dont need to fly out of town for those... : ) note that I live in the San Francisco Bay Area, Geez, talk to you later.

Although I'm sure there are writing projects in bus. & tech. writing and the speech class, which I have this semester. Yes don't rush at all. It is a lot harder getting a degree at home than at school. Make sure to use the internet to do any research to help. You can also ask instructors for help or ask help here. What are you taking?

Health Information Technology A.S. Degree program

Please don't get discourged by the fact that the AHIMA will not accept your degree from Penn Foster. You will need to take classed from one of their approved colleges. I am currently employed with a Dr. and he is very empressed with the courses I have already completed. I am in my third semester now. I have let him take the Biology exams and he stated he would have had a hard time answering the questions. Due to my Law and Ethics Classes our office is now in compliance with the all the HIPPA guidelines. The AHIMA my not approve but I tell right now a future employer will not be disappointed by your advanced knowledge and that's important in the race for jobs. Keep up the good work and study hard it's all worth it. When I finish I will be taking the CCS-P coding exam. All Dr's office who do their own billing will as time go's on be required to have a certified coder working for them. Carpi Diem

I know you posted this in June but I just joined. I am in my third semester with the Health Information Tech program and true the AHIMA will not accept Penn Foster for their Certification But an Employer IE: a Dr will approve of the specialized training you are going to get. In the state of Michigan I will be able to take the test to be a certified Coding specialist (CCS-P) and in the near future the Dr will have to hire someone who is certified to do their billing. Don't try to take the CCS test with out the education behind it the test here is over $300.00 and you don't want to have to retake it. Please consider continuing your Penn Foster degree it will not disappoint your future Employer. Good Luck L Nichol

As you finish a semester, the school will send you a re-enrollment form. This has to be completed and returned before they will send you the next semester - nothing is sent automatically. So if you want to wait a couple weeks before you start a semester, just hold off on sending in the form until you are ready.

There were a couple classes where I had to write simple things, like memos and a case brief; but the first real paper I encountered was semester six in Organizational Behavior. It looks like semester seven has three, although they call them things like "research projects", they are papers. I skipped a lot of classes in the early semesters due to transfer credits, so there might be papers there that I didn't have to do.

I noticed that the overall workload increased greatly with semester six though. Business Law had several projects, plus a final essay exam IN ADDITION to the proctored final exam. All of my classes now have discussion boards, projects and/or a paper, and webinars that I have to register for and watch online.

As long as you have completed and passed all subjects and paid in full….you will get your diploma 2 to 3 weeks after you take your last exam. If you have any failed subjects though, then you will have to pay for re-takes which the HS dept will mail you a letter about.

I think it’s safe to say that Japanese will not be something we add anytime soon….however it’s hard to say what the possibilities will be if we start offering programs on mobile devices. I’m sure the possibilities for subjects will become just about endless when/if that happens. Right now our newest focus on high school electives has been concentrations in specific subject areas like medical, and construction fields.

Again I do not have access to you or your friends student account but this is what I could find:

1. If a student is completing their studies/ exams in a suspiciously short time they may be flagged for rapid progression. For example in the High School Program you are given 3 years to complete it. A traditional High School requires 4 years of study. If you are completing a 3 year program in less than a year it does look suspicious. If a student is believed to be cheating they will be notified and given additional course work or exams to disprove this. If you are personally concerned about this I would contact Student Services.

2. No there is no online proctor exam for our high school students.

3. There is no exit exam for the high school program. Refer to your student site for the exams and projects needed to complete your program of study.

Yes, the list is kinda long but here it is. To view them log into your Penn Foster account and where it says "What would you like to do?"(in a box on the right hand side) you need to choose "View Forms & Handbook". You should be able to figure everything else out once you get to that point. I'm not sure if you have to complete half of you studies before you can go there but that's how I chose mine.

P.S don't choose too soon, you may change your mind and it will cost to change your electives.

Well hello guys names Rex! I just enrolled about 30 min ago. I had a few credits from a community college, so their in transfer as we speak. As soon as they get them i'll see what transferred and see what classes I don't have to take, but I'm already doing the Reading and Math course in the mean time. I'm taking the criminal justice associates program. Im planning to transfer to a RA school since Pennfoster's ACE reviewed and Im comfortable with that =] They did get my social and name wrong, but I have to call the student center tommorow at 7am when they open before I sign the enrollment form electronically. Other than that, just saying hello! =]

I'm in the same boat as you. I jumped into this program full steam ahead thinking all I had to do was complete the courses and then I would have a wealth of opportunities for jobs. Since then I've read a lot of things that say otherwise. And not just on these forums or in this thread.

However, I think if you are resourceful and look in the right places you can and will be able to find work without any further classes or certification. You might want to get other certificates down the road but you should be able to find work.

I have a good friend who took the MT program with Penn Foster and then found her own work. She just called hospitals and clinics all over the country and offered her services. She freelanced from home for the first year and worked for 5 doctors in different parts of the country. She made really good money too. Then she was hired by a doctor's office up in PA to do all of their transcription work and is making amazing money.

I think we should be using each other to network and make sure we can get jobs. I've even thought about trying to form a business or company with several other MT's and we all work from home. We wouldn't even have to be near each other or have a building or an office.

There are several websites I've found that offer jobs for MT's and Billing & Coding work from home as well.

So lets all just stay positive and try to help each other.

I have the same problem. Coding the lists, or principle diagnosis is easy to do but when you have to code senerios that include CPT or not , it is hard and confusing. I don't know how we can help each other. I have been reading and reading and asking questions. i am on MB&C2.

Good job! :) I'm one unit away from finishing my Wildlife/Conservation Program. I started last fall, but I've been taking it at a slower pace (typically 2 units per month) so I can squeeze my studies in with the rest of my busy life and not be stressed out. It's been fun and I have definitely learned a lot.

I like the idea that Emma has about an instant messaging service app, but I think it should be extended a bit more so you can talk to fellow classmates that are using the app about school, life, jobs, or just whatever is on their mind, provided that they stay within the rules and don't answer test questions and such.

I do not know what devices are out there. Obviously the iPad is the most well known. As long as the device has the capability to let us read, highlight, take notes, and go online to get help or take our exams that would be great. There have been times where I wish I had a laptop so I could one of courses because I take notes on my computer and it would have been nice to do it, but didn't have access to my computer.

Hi dee.borges. I am currently taking medical coding and billing also and am on my last exam. Actually, I just need to do my research paper and then send in my package. For the interpersonal communication class, I chose the written option. I have never liked giving speeches and writing is easier for me. If you're more comfortable with gathering your scenario information and writing an essay about it, I would go with the written option. Good luck!

I am one of those students who prefer the proctor because some of us have strange work schedules and trying to get to a test center at a certain time/day would not work. Not all of my exams have been all essay per say, but there is a lot of writing involved.

I haven't had any issues with the proctor not receiving my tests in a timely manner and PFC has rec'd them in 2 or 3 days from my proctor. Some instructors are quick to post the grades and some are not, which is very frustrating when you want to move on to your next semester. For me, I need all my grades posted so that I can submit for my reimbursement which I than use for my next semester fees.

My one complaint is that you have to take all semester proctored tests on the same day. Oh well, sometimes you have to take the good with the bad.

well as you know you take all your proctored exams on the same day and they allow 1 hour per test. As I recall (it was in my first semester) there were probably 20 or 25 questions. Its not an easy test if your really not into math. How did you do on your 2 exams?

Well I took the 2 exams and thankfully passed. Now I need to get thru the proctor exam. This will be my first proctor exam. Do you remember how long the exam was...50 questions...100 questions? I actully look forward to my proctor exam. The studies were tough for me (not into math), but I did really get a lot out of the class. The book set up was great...short and to the point chapters.

you can take time off, but you want to keep track of how much time. Depending on whether you are in an associates or bachelors program will determine how much time you have to complete. Associate Degree students are given 12 months to complete a semester and a maximum of 6 years to complete all 4 semesters. Bachelor Degree students receive 12 months of study time per semester with a maximum of 8 years to complete the program.

Yes Terri, as long as you are current with your payments on your first semester then we will essentially roll over your first semester balance into your second semester payments. Keep in mind though, that your monthly payment amount will increase as you are rolling over money. The only things you will have to do to start your second semester is sign and return the application once you receive it in the mail along with a new down payment for that semester.

late reaction to this whole conversation and sorry if im interupting.. but i love meeting new people!

I love to camp its like so fun! and i have always wanted to learn to surf! and skydive(but first i would have to do the indoor skydiving to see if i like it lol) i like to try alot of new things! ive jumped off the roof of a house boat but i will never do that again because last time i did it i almost hit the rail on the bottom story it was scary! Anyways like i said i like to meet new people!

I don't know about anyone else, but I am almost finished with this program and I have learned A LOT more than I thought I would. Some parts were harder than others....you just have to keep working at it until you get it....

One thing I would recommend to anyone taking a course is to see if you can find someone who can take it with you, MY sister and I both enrolled at the same time and have spent countless HOURS on SKYPE studying together. It really helped to be face to face with someone to talk over what we were learning. Often, when one of us was having a problem with something...the other saw it differently, and helped clear it up.

I think Penn Foster is great...

It was an ego blow to me at first. I mean it's been a while since high school and I am a little rusty but I didn't like being told that my 12th grade completion wasn't good enough and I would need to take a 8-10th grade level GED test to be accepted. I tried to be a good sport about it and looked into taking my GED here in Maryland but since my husband and I are in the military we are Oklahoma residence and until he gets out are planning on keeping it that way. Maryland wouldn't allow me to take the test here because I wasn't a resident. I was pretty up-set initially but then took it as divine intervention and am really glad I didn't go that route. University of Phoenix was almost 3 times the price as PF and that was including their military discount. We didn't want to take student loans so as for paying my through it, it would have really limited us financially. I can totally afford PF and I really like the program.

What part of Virginia to you live in? I am sorry you don't like it there. Do you have brothers and sisters? I am sure your family would miss you if you left. My family is in Oklahoma and I miss them so much sometimes.

I've been waiting for days for my shipment of my Medical Applications course for my 2nd semester and today I got a package but it was "General Science" I don't get why I received a different shipment that I'm not even taking then the one I need. I'm getting tired of waiting, it seems like Student Services does this ALL the time to me, I've had THE worst experiences with shipments, Oi sorry I just really want to get started and I would do it online but I don't like it online I prefer to have the books.

Thank you. Yes, I taught myself to play guitar. I used to play piano when I was younger, but I was kind of forced into piano and got bored of it. I absolutely adore playing guitar though.

You see, that's another thing. I live in Virginia but I hate it here and I want to move to another state somewhere near by to live when I'm older. But I don't know whether I should move away from my family before college and wait to go to college when I have a car and an apartment in another state or whether to stay here and go to college and get my associates degree and then move to another state and just hope that my agree will allow me to teach in a preschool there. Because obviously if I move I'm not going to know anybody, but if I go to college in that state, atleast I know a few people. Also, my family would hate for me to leave but I can't stand it here.

That's true. I don't think It's part of the public school system as well. If I did work in a preschool, I'd want to work in a Christain preschool. Oh wow! what did you do when they told you, you needed to get your g.e.d?

That's cool. Do you play any musical instruments? I am actually the opposite with kids age groups. When I was in India teaching I taught the older kids and my team mate taught the "smalleys", Oh I love small children but didn't think I had the creativity to teach them. I originally leaned more towards Elementary age. But, my heart has kind of changed on that. My last two jobs have involved caring for younger children and from a future mom prospective, my little ones will be little first. As I am learning in my current course "Fundamentals of Early Childhood Education" this stage is so vital for their development and if they can flourish at this age they will be more likely to flourish later.

On the whole job credentials thing, just as a disclaimer, definitely double check about the degrees. I am pretty sure that A.A. will allow you to teach in a preschool but it really depends on the state. Technically I don't think preschool is a part of the public school system like kindergarten so they may not have such strict rules about having a B.A. It sounds like you have some time to figure it out. You'll have keep me posted on how high school with PF is going. I loved my home school experience but one thing I regret is that I didn't get my diploma from an accredited organization. My diploma is legit according to the state of Oklahoma but another college I tried to get into wouldn't accept my home school diploma. They told me I had to get my GED. I don't want my kids to have to go through that. If they do home school through high school I want them graduate under an accrediting umbrella program that most/all colleges accept.

I never was contacted by anyone. I called student services and they transferred me to a gentleman who handles their transfer credits. He never called me back.

Regardless, I'm nearing the end of my first semester and finding that I'm actually finishing courses in 2-3 weeks. This is the same amount of time it would likely take me to study for CLEP or DANTES exams anyway. ;^)

okay then I need an associates degree. the thing is, I think it'd be awesome to work in a preschool but I wouldn't wanna work in an actual school or a daycare.

well I'm only 15 but I'm going to graduate in may of 2012 which is a year earlier than I would If I still went to public school. and I'm trying to decide whether or not to go to college a year early. when I do go, I'm going to a community college and I'm planning on taking 2 classes a year and I during summer school so that I can focus on them instead of taking a lot of classes and being stressed.

Yeah, that's another thing with me. I love kids, I can't wait until I get married someday and have kids. Like I feel like I was meant to be a mom or something, Idk it's hard to explain. But my number one love is music, my second love is kids, and my third is makeup. But I don't know if I'd actually ever wanna be a makeup artist. It would be pretty amazing for a while, but I think it'd get old after a while.

I think when I have kids I'm going to homeschool then. atleast homeschool then starting middle school through highschool. public and even private school systems really suck.

when I was in second grade I knew I wanted to be a teacher when I grew up. and I always loved english class, so I wanted to be an english teacher too. but now, I don't really think I'd enjoy teaching any grade but preschool. I helped out at a church up the street, It was for summer bible school and had the funnest time. I helped out with the preschool room; the rooms were seperated by age. so the room I was in had 3, 4, and 5 year olds and they were so sweet.

HI Marissa! Good luck with your high school studies. How much to you have left? I love kids too. My understanding so far of how the ECE works is that an Associates degree will get you teaching in a daycare or preschool, working in an after school program or as a teacher's aide in an elementary school. In order to teach Kindergarten-2nd grade you need a Bachelors degree. For either an A.A or a B.A. you need to check with your state's requirements to make sure that the college you choose has the credentials for teaching where you want to teach.

At this point I am not really looking at getting a job out of it. I definitely feel like God has given me calling to work with children though. I didn't go to college right out of high school. I am 25, married and in the next few years want to be a mom. When that happens I plan to stay home with my kids and possibly home school them. I figure this is good stuff for me to have for my kids and even any other scenarios I end up in with working with children (community volunteer work,missions, church ect.). I worked in India at an orphanage for 2 years and got thrown into teaching English. I loved it but had no training in it. That's how I discovered I wanted to learn how to teach. I would like to also get certified to teach English as a second language later. (Which at most will take me six months.) With that I can get certified to teach ESL overseas and probably still help people in my area as there are many ethnic groups in Maryland where I live who may need help with English. I just wouldn't be able to be an official "work at a school" ESL teacher. My husband and I hope to be overseas in the future as we both love traveling and other cultures. I am still open to getting a B.A. but playing that by ear.

I am so excited for you. Working with children is a very rewarding field. You can really make a difference in their lives. Keep in touch!

I've recently started the intro to Vet Tech and am hoping to finish by the end of next week. I'm trying to keep up y pace so I can get done with the first year as soon as possible. So far I've enjoyed the reading and haven't found it a burden but we'll see how that continues when I get to biology and the math portion. I'm most nervous for the proctored exam at the end.

I don't think anyone is against the idea of writing an essay for a course. What we are against is the awkward process of handwriting it and finding a proctor.

There is absolutely no reason we shouldn't be able to type these and no reason we shouldn't be able to submit them online. Both are done routinely at University of Phoenix and other online colleges.

I welcome the opportunity to demonstrate my full understanding of the course material, grammar skills and english comprehension. I'd just like the ability to do them on-line without having to harass a colleague to become a proctor.

This is the only real negative I have found with the Penn Foster experience and I hope you take steps to remedy it.

Because the majority of student tests are multiple choice the essay answers help the instructor see if you are:

A. Fully understanding the course material.

B. Are using correct grammar and English comprehension

We hold high standards to our students just as if they were attending a typical college/community college. We have high expectations for our students and we want the best from them. We want them to leave our school with the fundamentals of learning ... having a grasp on composition, for example ... because in life your grammar and composition skills can make or break you. Essay questions will always be in our finals.

Some of our programs use only online tests because they are more "hands-on" and don't require essays so to speak. Like, Floral design or Automotive Mechanic.

We do understand you point about testing centers and expediting the exam grading process. Many students do not have access to transportation so having the option to choose a proctor that is local is the most convenient option for them. At this time Penn Foster does not have testing facilities across the globe to accomodate our students, especially our international students. However, with our recent merger with The Princeton Review we are looking into utilizing their test prep facilities to better serve our students. We appreciate your feedback and are continually trying to make the Penn Foster experience more challenging and more convenient for our students.

I am taking the BSBM degree program and the Personal Trainer Diploma program, and for both of them the first couple of classes only had the pdf study guides - no textbooks - so you can start right away instead of waiting on the first shipment. In fact, with the Personal Trainer nearly all of the materials are study guides.

I took several CLEP exams, including English without the writing component. That was the only one I checked on beforehand - because some schools require the essay portion. I found that PF was very generous in giving me credit towards electives. For example, the American Government CLEP was applied to World Civilization (or History - something like that)

That is the point everyone is trying to make - if the finals were more like the regular exams, instructors wouldn't have to examine and grade hundreds of exams. I have a couple of co-workers taking online courses at other schools, and none of them have to submit a paper exam by mail. Nor do they have proctors. They all go to a testing center like Prometric to take computer based exams. I took several CLEP and certification exams that way, and security is very tight to prevent cheating. And the feedback is instant.

Jo Ann - Penn Foster does have monthly payment plans, but doesn't qualify for Federal Financial Aid or student loans. Not that a non-degree program would qualify anyway. Does your employer have tuition assistance?

I plan to focus on clients who are like me - a little older, who might not be comfortable working out with a 25 year old bodybuilder. After all, we have an understanding of how it feels to age, and the challenges it brings, which you can't get from a book.

I took Computer Applications and Advanced Computer Applications for the BSBM degree, and both had a project rather than a proctored final exam. The projects were just stuff like creating a Word document or a spreadsheet based on the information you are given.

I just re-enrolled for semester 7, and it looks like three of the four classes I'm taking require a paper! I HATE to write papers! I agonize over them for the longest time. Last semester took me forever to complete because I kept putting off the paper for Organizational Behavior. Now I have three to do!

English Comp is A LOT of writing - 2 exams, 3 essay's and 15 journal entries. The entries are an ongoing journal and you are given the topic for the most part. I did find most of the reading enjoyable. It took me a long time to finish that class, but, that's because I don't enjoy writing assignments. I found the nutrition class to be very easy and I finished in about 2 weeks. Send me your email address if you have specific questions on the assignments.

I loved the math for business and finance class!!! But, I did not like the English Composition class - too much writing. That was a lot work, not that I mind a lot work, but, I do mind assigned writing! I'm still waiting on one more grade to post, the other 2 grades posted 2 days ago. What class do you have next???
